When tragedy
strikes the workplace, employers face not only the obvious human
loss but also immense financial risk. They look to their EAP for
leadership in the immediate facilitation of individual and
organizational recovery. Critical Incident Response has become a
mainstay in the EAP’s list of services and offers both
tremendous opportunity and risk in establishing the business
case for EAP services. Recently, a growing body of knowledge and
research is challenging the efficacy of the intervention models
currently in use and employers are evaluating optimal responses.
Psychological
First Aid (PFA), the approach currently advocated by most
authoritative guidelines, is more a concept than a particular
technique. Effective PFA practice requires not only developing
competence in a range of evidence-informed exercises and
interventions but, even more, nurturing a professional capacity
to assess situations, select and tailor appropriate approaches,
facilitate partnerships, and promote resilience. The EAP
professional holds ethical and business responsibility to remain
current in the understanding, communication, and delivery of
best practices.
This
presentation will address the evolving nature of Critical
Incident Response Services by reviewing issues of concern and
identifying the elements present in evidence-informed best
practices. The
presenter will outline phase-sensitive, multi-component
practices designed to position the organization’s leadership as
competent and compassionate, minimize risk of harm from a poorly
delivered intervention, serve as a risk management tool with
favorable return-to-work and return-to-function strategies,
strategically define the role of provider more as consultant
than counselor, assess and triage impacted individuals
appropriately, and help individuals and work groups tap into
available internal, informal, and professional resources.
