Characteristics distinguishing an EAP from other professions are discussed. The authors also present six components of the EAP's core technology which include: (1) identification of employees' behavior problems based on job performance issues; (2) provision of expert consultation to supervisors, managers and union stewards on how to utilize the EAP policies and procedures; (3) availability of an appropriate use of constructive confrontation; (4) micro linkages with counseling, treatment and other community resources; (5) macro linkages between the work organization and counseling, treatment and other community resources; and (6) the EAP program focus on employee alcohol problems.
